MTV Music Videos Hit Cell Phones
September 27, 2005
Viacom’s MTV and Warner signed an agreement Monday that will allow MTV to create and distribute music videos to mobile phones. MTV has access to Warner’s artists to create mini videos and will also shorten clips of the popular MTV shows for cell phone user’s delight.
Cell phone service providers will offer packages and rates, giving users access to the on-demand videos. Judy McGrath, chief executive of MTV stated, “We're focused on being on every screen our audiences care about, and wireless is in the forefront.” She also stated that they plan on making deals with other music labels, to expand their artist base.
Currently, MTV has deals in progress with Sprint and Verizon to launch their new music videos. The business is starting already overseas and should reach the United States soon.
According to Warner Music Chief Executive Officer Edgar Bronfman Jr., Warner is hoping that new contracts like these will help create a new avenue for music revenue as well as increase sales. The music industry has taken a hit financially, due to the increase of music pirating.
